Satsang - Gathering for Truth

Satsang is a Sanskrit word combining "satya" meaning "truth" and "sangha" meaning "group." It describes a gathering of people for the purpose of spiritual truth. Satsang is often used when referring to a meeting with a guru or a spiritual mentor. During Satsang, participants read inspiring words, discuss its teachings, meditate, and find ways to bring this awareness into daily life.

While attending services or spiritual study groups can be thought of as participating in Satsangs, this practice can also apply to any group of people that are gathered to inspire one another and express the truth free from judgment. A Satsang can be a group of people that are gathered to sing, play, or listen to music. All that needs to be there is the intention to inspire one another and tell the truth. A Satsang can also be a support group, book club, yoga class, or meeting between friends for coffee or conversation. We don't need to be in a place of worship or supervised by appointed leaders to experience the truth. The truth can be found in every moment and it can be experienced with anyone. Spending time with someone who enlightens us can be as simple as visiting with a grandmother or talking to a best friend.

There is wisdom to be gleaned from being with people even when the gatherings are not specifically intended for personal improvement or spiritual transformation. Any occasion we are gathered with people who understand and support us can be a spiritual experience. While gatherings with the intention of communing with spirit are undoubtedly powerful and inspiring, getting together with people that uplift us by their presence alone is also vital to our well-being. When we recognize all the people we know that support and enrich us, our lives can become an extended Satsang.

The True Value

A king once got separated from his kinsmen while chasing a deer. He wandered alone in the forest. As dusk fell, he knocked at the door of a tiny cottage in the jungle. It was opened by a poor woodcutter who gave the 'stranger' a warm welcome. He offered him his own bed to sleep along with some simple but tasty food.

In the morning, while taking leave of the wood cutter, the king disclosed his real identity and asked him, what he could give in return for his hospitality. The wood cutter being a simpleton asked, " Can you give me a place where I can cut trees and sell them?" The king took him far away to the edge of another jungle and said, "This is yours from today. Do what you like with it."

The wood cutter would cut trees and burn them to make coal, because they were too heavy for him to carry to the market place. Several months passed. The woodcutter was very happy.

When the monsoon season started, there was heavy rainfall and the wood became wet. The ground was full of slush, so it was impossible to burn the wood to make coal. He had no choice but to carry the wet logs of wood to the market to sell it. When he showed the wood to the buyer, the buyer offered a sum that was a hundred times more than he was paying earlier.

The wood cutter was confused! Earlier he was supplying coal whereas now it was wood and that too, wet wood! Where was the catch? The buyer told him that the wood that he had brought was no ordinary wood, it was real Sandalwood! The wood cutter realized what a fool he had been. He had cut and burnt hundreds of Sandalwood trees to make coal, little realizing the value of this precious wood. Had he known, by now he could have been a very, very rich man.

We also need to understand the value of this precious human body awarded to us by Supreme Lord. Without realizing its importance and proper utility we are burning it at both ends in the fire of our worldly desires. Most of our energies are burnt in doing futile things that eventually have neither value nor meaning.

But, by the time we realize that we are wasting our lives, it is perhaps too late. The whole life burnt in hoarding wealth, making friends and getting material pleasures, brings us to a miserable state at the end of life. At that time when nobody cares, we turn our face towards God, but where is the energy to do any devotion

The sooner we realize the better chance we shall have. Let's not waste our precious human birth like that foolish woodcutter.

The one who attains a permanent place in spiritual world using this temporary and perishable body is really intelligent.

God is the embodiment of love and the ocean of compassion. But you are unable to receive God's love and compasssion because you have filled your mind with worldly feelings. If you want to receive something sacred, give up all that is unsacred. If the head is empty, it can be filled with anything. But if the head is already stuffed with worldly desires, how is it possible to fill it with sacred feelings? First and foremost, empty your head of all worldly feelings. Only then can it be filled with divine love. For this, you have to cultivate Thyaga (sacrifice). That is true Yoga.
He who is ever ready to sacrifice his comfort for helping another, is a genuine devotee..

Pushkar – The Ultimate Pilgrimage

Pushkar is known as teerthraj or king of all pilgrimages. It is situated in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Pushkar has the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma.

According to Padma Purana, Lord Brahma, the creator amongst the Hindu trinity, decided to make an offering of a fire sacrifice (Yagya) after completing the creation of the universe.

In order to make this sacrificial offering, Lord Brahma wanted to identify a suitable place. He tossed a lotus bloom and the flower landed where we now find the Pushkar Lake. So, Pushkar was chosen for performing this sacred ritual.

Though most people know of only one Pushkar, there are in fact three Pushkars. All of them are in Ajmer. It is believed that while the lotus bloom itself landed in the Pushkar Lake, the two leaves that came with the stem of the lotus fell at two other lakes. One of them is called Bhuda Pushkar and the other one is called Madhya Pushkar. Villagers who live around Bhuda Pushkar and Madhya Pushkar believe that those are the real Pushkars.

When all the preparations for his great yagya were complete, Brahma’s consort Savitri failed to join him. In order to complete the ritual, he married a local gujjar girl called Gayatri and proceeded with the yagya. When Savitri arrived, she was furious to see Gayatri beside Lord Brahma.

Since Lord Brahma did not wait for Savitri for this great sacrificial offering, she felt bad and she told Lord Brahma that Pushkar is the only place where he would be worshipped in this world. That explains why we have only one Brahma temple whereas there are thousands and thousands of temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that Lord Brahma pooled water from Badrinath, Jagnnath, Rameshwaram and Dwarka to create Pushkar Lake. That is why Pushkar lake is called the teerthraj.

Since Pushkar is the place where the first sacrificial offering was made by Lord Brahma and since the water in Pushkar Lake represents combination water from four important pilgrimages for the Hindus, it is considered to be as holy as the water from river ganges. It follows, therefore, that if you take a holy dip at teerthraj Pushkar Lake, you automatically become eligible for gathering the boons for visiting the other four pilgrimages.

SCIENTIFIC MEANING OF GAYATRI MANTRA

Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma. This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Veda-Mata, the mother of the Vedas.

The literal meaning of the mantra is:

God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty.
You are all Light. You are all Knowledge and Bliss.
You are Destroyer of fear; You are Creator of this Universe,
You are the Greatest of all. We bow and meditate upon your light.
You guide our intellect in the right direction.

The mantra, however, has a great scientific import too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition. The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called Milky Way or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. All planets round the sun.

Each of the above bodies revolves round at its own axis as well. Our sun along with its family takes one round of the galactic centre in 22.5 crore years. All galaxies including ours are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 miles per second. And now the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step-by-step:

Om bhur bhuvah swah:

OM(Aum):-
Aum is the mystic name for the Hindu Trimurti, and represents the union of the three gods, viz. a for Brahma, u for Vishnu and m for Mahadev which is another name of Shiva. The three sounds also symbolize the three Vedas (Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda). According to Hindu philosophy(see Mandukya Upanishad), the letter A represents creation, when all existence issued forth from Brahma's golden nucleus; the letter U refers to Vishnu the god of the middle who preserves this world by balancing Brahma on a lotus above himself, and the letter M symbolizes the final part of the cycle of existence, when Vishnu falls asleep and Shiva has to breathe in so that all existing things have to disintegrate and are reduced to their essence to him. More broadly, Aum is said to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe. It is said to be the original sound that contains all other sounds, all words, all languages and all mantras.

Bhur the earth, Bhuvah the planets (solar family), Swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second.
This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om. The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it too their colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever-revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, "Omiti ekaksharam Brahma", meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om, which contains only one syllable (8/12). This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-Brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy= 1/2MV2 (Newton's second law) and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or storehouse of energy (prana).

Tat savitur varenyam:
Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person. Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars).
A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under.

Bhargo devasya dheemahi:
Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The Rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do Japam of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra) . This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under.

Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path.

Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra:
The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om, (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing / respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our (nah) intellect dhiyo.

The philosophy of joy..

The philosophy of joy

The sole search of every being is joy.

Whenever one is searching,

whatever one is searching, one is looking for joy

— whether it is spiritual or material,

whether it is in the movies, bars,

or

in the church or temple;

whether it is money,

fame or power.

The search simply is for joy

and the Divine is all joy and bliss.

Bliss

is nothing

but qualified joy,

a joy that is devoid of feverishness,

suffering and pain.

Love

comes along with pain.

Silence

is a little serious;

joy

is mischievous.

One cannot have mischief

if there is no joy and Krishna is all mischief.

Krishna is absolute joy,

absolute bliss.

Nothing whatsoever could take away

the joy from Krishna.

If you look at his life,

it was miserable

— he was born in misery.

Kansa,

the uncle of Krishna,

is a symbol of ego.

Ego

is far away from joy;

ego tries to kill the joy in us.

Children are so full of joy

because there is no ego.

The moment ego comes,

separation comes.

We destroy

the bliss,

the beauty,

that innocent joy.

Kansa sent several people to kill Krishna

but was unsuccessful.

Krishna,

when he was just eight or ten,

fell in love with Radha,

she was much elder to Krishna.

That love was such a pure love.

People did not know

why they were in such a love with Krishna;

everyone would flock around him.

Mischief is the outcome of joy.

Children are very mischievous.

Parents say,

'Don't do this!', 'Stop that!'

It's very normal for children

to be mischievous;

we should let them do it.

Sometimes it entails trouble for the parents,

but there is also fun.

What is life without fun?

Krishna told many lies,

played and troubled people around him.

People around him would like

to be troubled by him.

People would complain with anger,

but the moment they came in his presence,

they would start giggling,

all their anger would vanish.

In the presence of pure bliss,

joy, all complaints vanish

and life appears like a play.

One can look at every trouble as a challenge

or can spend it crying and complaining.

You know,

what you have in your

hand indicates what you are inside.

If you have a gun in your hand, it indicates fear or violence.

If you have a flower in your hand, it indicates you are like a flower.

If you have a flute in your hand, you are like a flute

— hollow and empty.

Krishna

has the flute in the hand

and the whole style of standing indicates

his whole philosophy.

One leg is firm on the ground.

A dance can happen when your feet

are first touching the ground.

If your legs are buried in the mud,

a dance cannot happen.

Not even if it is up in the ground.

One leg has to be firm on the ground,

the other can be up in the air and then dance happens.

Joy is the dance of life and

the life of Krishna is such a dance.

One can imagine Krishna everywhere;

you cannot pinpoint Krishna as one thing.

Sometimes he may ride a horse,

be a charioteer and in some other place

he can be dancing.

Krishna is the symbol of all possibilities,

the total blossoming of all aspects of human, or Divine

— whatever you call.

It's very difficult to really understand

Krishna's personality.

The rishis called him the full embodiment

of the Divine total because all that a human could be,

a being could be, is all in Krishna.

You can see him as the perfect friend.

Once one of his close aides tells Krishna,

''O Krishna,

I cannot understand you.

I have been with you for the past fifteen years,

you confuse me more and more everyday!

At one point I see you as such a courageous person

who could alone fight war with

so many people,

at other times you hide yourself in the closet.

You behave completely eccentric.

One time you are so powerful,

another time so scared.

One time you come out with such a great wisdom,

another time you ask me advice.''

One place he is a servant,

another time king of the whole province,

who takes very good care of all subjects.

Contrast energies

Arjuna was ready to quit everything

and go to the Himalayas.

He was not ready to fight the war.

Krishna convinced him.

Krishna was a good teacher

because he taught as a friend.

He said,

''You're such a great warrior.

Anyway, everyone is already dead.
I do everything,

you just be an instrument.''

In the battlefield,

if someone could sustain the depth of awareness,

clarity of mind when everybody

is in such chaos, and give the highest knowledge,

that leaves you in awe of Krishna.

You can have a big smile

when everything is firm and

smooth but when everything

is upside down and you smile,

then you have achieved something.

Everything was upside down,

chaotic,

wherever Krishna went and yet,

the smile would simply capture everything.

His smile was so great that people would forget

their sorrow and joy would simply flood.

Even the saints would fall

in love in that field of energy;

people who have renounced

everything would be interested.

The dispassionate one will be drawn.

The word Krishna,

itself, means that which is attractive,

that draws everything.

The very core of your being is such;

the bliss of the self, the joy of the self is like that.

It just draws everything.

In a symbolic manner,

also, it is so beautiful.

Krishna was such a charmer that people

could not stay away from him.

Young and old,

boys and girls and even the rishis,

could not stay away;

they would just follow him around.

The gopis said,

''the love between you and me; only my soul knows.''

The depth of the love, joy, and devotion

was like wildfire all around Krishna.

In love there is 2 percent lust.

In lust there is 2 percent love.

You may have noticed when children are in deep love,

they come and hug, hang to your neck,

kiss you, lick all parts of your face.

What do you call it, love or lust?

Love.

But the act is very lustful.

It's the same thing with a puppy.

When you come back home,

the puppy will jump all over you and lick you

by which it is expressing its love to you.

Intense love wants expression.

You hug, shake hands, give flowers...

nothing really satisfies.

Love cannot be fully expressed,

yet it cannot be without expression.

That's the nature of joy and love.

It wants to find an expression.

The love of the gopis and Krishna was such a love.

Krishna means the most attractive.

It is the divinity that is the most attractive;

the energy that pulls everything to it.

Krishna is the formless centre which is everywhere.

Any attraction from anywhere is coming

only from Krishna.

Often people fail to see the spirit

behind the attraction and merely

hold on to the outer shell.

And the moment you try to possess

the shell, you will see Krishna

has played a trick and you will be left

with an empty shell in your hands and tears in your eyes.

The mind moves towards beauty, joy and truth.

Krishna tells Arjuna,

''I am the beauty in the Beautiful,

the strength in the Strong,

the wisdom in the Wise.''

Be clever like Radha —

don't be tricked by Krishna.

Krishna could not escape from Radha,

for, her whole world was filled with Krishna.

If you can see that

wherever there is an attraction,

there is Krishna;

then you are Radha,

you are in your centre.

No God or Know God?

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem Science has with God, The Almighty.


He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.


Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes.


Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him.


Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm? (Student is silent.)


Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fellow. Is God good?

Student: Yes.


Prof: Is Satan good ?

Student: No.


Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From...God.. .


Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Yes.


Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student: Yes.


Prof: So who created evil?

(Student does not answer. )



Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?

Student: Yes, sir.



Prof: So, who created them?

( Student has no answer.)



Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?

Student: No, sir.



Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student: No, sir.


Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.



Prof: Yet you still believe in Him ?

Student: Yes.



Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.



Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.



Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.



Student: And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.



Student: No sir. There isn't.


(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events .)



Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat,


But we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold.


Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.



(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre .)


Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?



Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't.


If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?



Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?



Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure.


Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.


To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?


Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?


(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)



Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?


(The class is in uproar .)


Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?


(The class breaks out into laughter.)


Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.


With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?



(The room is silent . The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable. )



Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.


Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH .

That is all that keeps things moving & alive....... ......... ..

Tips for Spiritual Growth..

Spiritual growth is the process of inner awakening, and becoming conscious of our inner being. It means the rising of the consciousness beyond the ordinary existence, and awakening to some universal truths. It means going beyond the mind and the ego and realizing who you really are. Spiritual growth is not a means for escaping from responsibilities, behaving strangely and becoming an impractical person. It is a method of growing and becoming a stronger, happier and a more responsible person.

Acknowledge the fact that you are a spirit with a physical body, not a physical body with a spirit. If you can accept this idea, it will change your attitude towards many things in life.

Analyze your personality and mind, and try to find out what is it that makes you feel conscious and alive.

Be in control of what enters your mind. Open the door for the positive and close it for the negative.

Develop the happiness habit, by always looking at the brighter side of life and endeavoring to be happy. Happiness comes from within. Do not let outer circumstances decide your happiness.

Exercise your will power and decision making ability. This strengthens you and gives you control over your mind.

Thank the universe for everything that you receive.

Develop tolerance, patience, tact and consideration for others in your life.

Read a lot of spiritually uplifting books. Think about what you read, and incorporate this information in changing the path of your life.

Meditate for at least 15 minutes every day. If you do not know how to meditate, refer to books or websites or consult a teacher who can teach you how to meditate.

Learn to calm your mind through concentration exercises and meditation.
